Fallingwater (The Kaufmann House)
Fallingwater is a historic house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright between 1935 and 1937. The home was constructed as a private weekend retreat for Edgar J. Kaufmann, owner of Kaufmann’s Department Store, and his wife Liliane. It is located in the Laurel Highlands of southwest Pennsylvania, approximately 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Wright’s revolutionary concept was to build the house not just near the waterfall on the property, but directly over it.

Architectural Significance
The residence is celebrated as the definitive masterpiece of Organic Architecture, a philosophy Wright championed to promote harmony between human habitation and the natural world. Spanning 5,330 square feet, the structure features dramatic cantilevered concrete trays that mimic the natural rock ledges of the Bear Run stream.

Legacy and Preservation
Fallingwater was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and was later inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 as part of "The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright." Today, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy owns and operates the site, maintaining it as a public museum that attracts visitors from around the globe.

The Glass House by Philip Johnson

The home was designed using concepts developed by German architects in the 1920s ("Glasarchitektur"). The views of the surrounding environment serve as the "wallpaper" in a house made entirely of glass ("I have very costly wallpaper," Johnson once quipped.

The Farnsworth House, which was designed by Mies van der Rohe, was another source of motivation for Johnson. The Glass House is home to a collection of pieces associated with the Bauhaus movement, including furniture designed by Mies.
