Bauhaus Teapot by Marianne Brandt

During her time as a student and then as a teacher in the Bauhaus metal workshop, Brandt designed and constructed various prototypes, including the teapot. The initial version of the prototype was completed during her first year as an apprentice at the workshop, which was directed at the time by the charismatic Hungarian constructivist László Moholy-Nagy.

Moholy-own Nagy's constructivist background served as inspiration for the design; similar geometric compositions may be seen in his collage work. But Brandt also worked to make sure the teapot's shape was purposeful; this concept became an important tenet of contemporary industrial design.
